In order to conduct a home remedy, a suitable container is required. For a complete-body-treatment a container such as a rain-water-barrel (500 liters), a tub, a kids-pool, or a swimming pool is needed. The equipment essential for the treatment container needs to follow the requirements specified under "Maintenance". For the transfer of the fish from the aquarium to the treatment container, it is important that the water temperature of the treatment container is similar to that of the aquarium. Within two to three days, the temperature can be increased to a maximum temperature of 35'C. In order to safeguard the fish from stress and to get better results from the treatment, it is recommended not to move the fish to any other container once the fish have been placed in the treatment container and the treatment is in progress. The recommended treatment time for successful results is two to four hours a day for a period of up to four weeks.
The active role of the fish during treatment is the removal of the upper-most layer of sick skin and simultaneous injection of small dosed of dithranol-a salt containing enzyme under the skin of the patient. This accelerates the natural re-generation of the skin. During and up to four weeks of the treatment, it is VERY important to feed the fish with their usual and accustomed food, as the nibbled off skin does not contain enough mineral-substances and vitamins.
